SANY concrete machines help build longest railway bridge in Kenya

  • 2016.12.08

When Kenya President visited the construction site of Tsavo River Super Bridge in 2015, he was astonished by the achievements made in such a short time, and he looked forward to the completion of the longest railway bridge in Kenya.

SANY provided 6 concrete batching plants, 2 concrete truck pumps, truck mixers and several truck cranes for the construction work of the bridge, which is one important section of Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway, Kenya's biggest infrastructure project since its 1963 independence.

The 1,987.7- meter long bridge is a post-tensioned prestressed concrete structure that adopts T shaped abutment, and the beams are supported by piers of reinforced concrete. SANY concrete batching plants are responsible for producing all the high strength concrete that needed for the bridge construction.

The bridge is supported by 215 bored piles, 43 pile caps, 18 open excavation foundations, 59 bridge piers and two bridge platforms. The truck mixers are used to transfer the high strength concrete to the construction site, and then truck pumps will pump the concrete to the bridge pier structure.

Meanwhile, the bridge is designed with the highest place up to 35.1 meters, and a 32 meter-long span is reserved between two adjacent piers for the wild animals to pass across the bridge, which will greatly protect the delicate ecosystem of the national park. Truck cranes are mainly responsible for the lifting of large steel structures and other heavy construction materials.

Besides, SANY's cranes and concrete machines are environmental friendly with low noise and less concrete residue waste thanks to optimized structure design and reliable power and hydraulic system. China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi was particularly impressed by the ecological sensitivity maintained on the project, as what he called the "natural and harmonious image of the African grasslands" was preserved through the integration of 14 wildlife corridors into the railway design.
