The rains since the beginning of May caused the biggest floods in the history of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil. Besides the strong storms that hit the State, the failure of dams, the overflow of protective dikes, and the inability of suction pumps to carry out all the water drainage work are also structural reasons that justified the unprecedented floods.
More than 85 percent of the cities in Rio Grande do Sul were affected by floods due to persistent rains, with 428 of the 497 cities in Rio Grande do Sul suffering devastating effects. According to Civil Defense, almost 1.5 million people have already suffered the consequences of the storms, as many as 163,786 have been left homeless, 67,428 are in shelters, and 100 is the total number of deaths until this moment. In addition to 130 missing persons, and 374 injured, it is the biggest tragedy currently experienced in Brazil with no end in sight, and one of the biggest catastrophes caused by storms in the country's history.
